Off the Pier at St. Anne’s

from Off the Pier at St. Anne’s

The old green pier stares eyeless

into the sun, its broken panes witness

to the passing of time under the wings of gulls.

Only after cumulus thunder woos us

with a string of broken promises

does the sea roar loud enough

to make us wish we’d never sought

the distant vagaries of wind and wave.

–excerpt from “Off the Pier at St. Anne’s” in Jumping Off the Train by Donna Pucciani (Orchard House Press 2007).
