Extinction

. . . Institutional hacks

with mowers and goggles

extinguish small flowers

in their prime. The now-

homeless orange-tip butterfly

seeks somewhere to light

near Chudleigh, among

the garlic mustard by the train station,

little friends abandoned

in a cloud of herbicide.

–excerpt from “Extinction” in A Light Dusting of Breath by Donna Pucciani (virtual artists collective/purple flag, 2015). First published in Off the Coast.
